The photo session ladder

Work the session like a training exercise, not a shoot:

1. Pick the dog's best hour. After a walk and a meal, when the zoomies are spent. A tired dog holds a sit; a fresh one does not.
2. Recruit a helper. One person shoots, one person manages treats. The helper stands directly behind the photographer with treats at lens height, which pulls the dog's eyes to the camera.
3. Eye level, always. Get on the floor or the dog's eye line. Shots down at a standing human's height flatten the pet into a rug.
4. Burst mode, ten frames. Dogs do not hold expressions. Fire a burst on every pose and keep the sharpest.
5. Under five minutes of actual posing. Two or three setups, then done while the dog is still happy.
6. End on a win. Last frame is an easy sit with a treat delivered. The dog remembers the session as a good job, which matters if you shoot again at Christmas.

Lighting and phone settings

• Golden hour outdoors is the whole game. Low warm sun from the side, dog and owner side-by-side facing the light, grass or a plain wall behind. Side light shows fur texture the way flat light cannot.
• Indoors, one window at 45 degrees. Dog facing the window, camera between window and dog. Curtains in the frame eat contrast; a bare wall behind the pair keeps it clean.
• Portrait mode warning. The blur algorithm chews fine fur edges into smudge. Use the 1x main lens in normal mode for anything with long fur, and let distance do the separating.
• Tap the eye, then pull exposure down slightly. Black fur needs the exposure dragged down to hold detail; white fur needs a half-step up. Focus on the nearest eye, always.
• Never fire flash at the dog. A camera flash at face level startles most dogs and can end the session. If the room is too dark for a sharp frame, change rooms.

What goes wrong

• The costume chews itself. Straps, dangling tails, and fringe get eaten mid-session. Trim loose ends before the dog discovers them.
• Portrait-mode fur smear. Covered above; normal lens, closer distance.
• Busy backgrounds. Fall leaf piles are beautiful and visually loud. Put the pair two meters in front of the leaves, not in them.
• The owner out of frame. The duo is the point; shoot wide enough that both silhouettes read, then crop.
• One pose, twenty minutes. Change the setup, not the pose count. Two or three good setups beat one overworked one.
