What people actually shoot in-store

Four genres dominate:

1. The mirror try-on. Costume on, phone up, decision frame. The most useful of the four, because it is the only shot that shows fit.
2. The hanger comparison. Costume on the rack next to you for scale, or held up against the body. Useful for length and color, useless for fit.
3. The bag-versus-reality shot. Printed packaging beside the actual garment. Fair or savage depending on the costume, always popular.
4. The group haul. Everyone holding their pick, shot in an aisle or at the register end. The photo that ends up in the group chat.

The fluorescent ceiling problem, and the fixes

Seasonal pop-up stores run high ceilings, bare overhead tubes, and mixed daylight from entrances. That combination flattens faces, shifts the color cast, and turns every shiny fabric into a highlight minefield. Four fixes that cost nothing:

• Shoot near the entrance zones where daylight mixes in; the light there is softer and more directional than in the deep aisles.
• Get the ceiling out of frame. Tilt the phone down: the ceiling tubes are the worst element in every store photo. Shoot from chest height, angled slightly down.
• Portrait mode, single subject. Depth simulation cleans up the background clutter of costumes on racks.
• Check the color at zoom. If skin reads green or grey, move two meters toward the entrance instead of fighting it in editing; the cast is baked into the file.

Mirror selfie rules

• Phone at chest height, angled about 30 degrees, never straight-on at eye level. Straight-on mirror shots put the phone dead center and the posture reads stiff.
• Wipe the mirror first with a sleeve. Half of all blurred try-on shots are shot through dust.
• Watch what the mirror includes. Store mirrors photograph everyone nearby, shoppers and staff included. Wait for a clear frame or angle to exclude other people, and never photograph strangers or employees without their okay.
• Mind the store. Ask staff before pointing a camera in their direction, buy the costume if you opened and tried it, and leave the aisle as clear as you found it. Try-on etiquette in any shop is the same.

The five-step try-on sequence

1. Shoot the tag first. Size, price, and brand in one frame, so the decision survives the drive home.
2. The hanger shot. Full length against your body, before trying it on.
3. Try on, then shoot front. Stand square, phone at chest height, the whole costume visible head to hem.
4. The three-quarter turn. The frame that actually predicts party photos: 30 to 45 degrees off the mirror, weight on the back foot, arms relaxed.
5. The move test. Raise both arms, sit if the party will be seated, walk three steps. Photograph the worst moment of that motion; that is what the night will look like.

What goes wrong

• Motion blur. Store light is dim for phone shutters. Brace the phone against the mirror, tap to focus, and hold still for a half-second after the tap.
• The missing mirror. Pop-up floors often have one or two mirrors total. Find the mirror before choosing what to try on.
• Under-lit eye holes. Masks and hoods photograph as black voids under overhead light. Lift the mask to brow height for one frame.
• Impulse sizing. The mirror flatters a costume you will wear for six hours. Sit down in it, in the aisle, before deciding.
• The bag-art decision. Buying from the printed art instead of the garment on the rack is how the bag-versus-reality genre exists at all.
