Student Headshots: Check Campus Options Before Paying

Compare an existing photograph, an eligible campus photo service and a paid session around the files and timing you actually need.

Check campus options before paying: Eligibility, Access, Remaining need
Original purchase-decision diagram. It illustrates a review process, not a tested output or customer result. Reviewed October 19, 2026.

Before buying student headshots, check whether your campus already offers a photo service you can use. A career center, department or organized event may supply the portrait you need. Availability, eligibility and delivery matter as much as the advertised price.

UC Berkeley provides one concrete example: its career resources list a free professional photobooth, and its photo page explains access for students, faculty and staff, a Cal 1 Card requirement and delivery to a Berkeley email address.12 That does not mean every university offers the same service, or that every visitor is eligible.

This guide provides a purchase decision rather than a recommendation to put a photograph on every application. If the question is whether a resume should include one, use the resume-photo guide first.

Check the service before relying on it

Question Why it changes the purchase What to record
Am I eligible? A free resource may be restricted to a campus group Required affiliation, account or ID
Can I attend? Access may depend on location, opening days or an event Current booking or walk-in instructions
How are files delivered? A restricted email address may be required Delivery account and expected access
Will the output fit? A single background or crop may not meet every recipient's brief Needed placement, framing and files
Is the timing safe? Selection and recipient review still take time Deadline and a usable fallback

Berkeley's page tells visitors to bring the required campus card and check current office availability.2 Use the current page for your own institution rather than an old social post. If the information is incomplete, ask the service before purchasing a separate session or traveling to use it.

Give the portrait a specific job

A LinkedIn profile, a department biography and an internship-program portal can have different instructions. Write down the actual recipient and who will review the photo. Do not pay for several looks when one recognizable portrait can supply the necessary crops.

If an employer or program provides a brief, follow that brief. Ask whether there is already an approved group photography opportunity. For a public profile, inspect the image at its actual displayed size as well as in the large original.

The LinkedIn buying guide separates likeness and replacement decisions. The website bio crop guide helps check reuse across layouts.

Compare the routes fairly

Keep an existing photograph if it remains current, recognizable and suitable for the destination. Use an eligible campus service when the location, schedule and delivered file fit. Consider a paid photographer if you need direct coaching, a particular real location or a tightly specified session.

An AI shoot is another option for portrait candidates when the destination permits the intended use and you can review the results. A provider's sample does not prove your likeness will be reproduced accurately. Check the face and surrounding details before relying on a candidate, particularly for a recipient with its own image policy.

Compare the whole one-time cost

MyPhotoAI's current US Starter offer includes 3 HD photos for US$5. Plus includes 10 for US$10, while Everything includes all photos from one shoot for US$10.3 Personalized generation begins after payment. There is no subscription in that offer; another shoot requires another purchase.

That is a paid alternative, not a reason to skip a suitable no-charge service. Include travel, scheduling and the time you need to inspect files in your comparison. Generation can take over an hour, and neither a campus booth nor an AI package should be assumed to satisfy every recipient automatically.

Download the student-headshot route worksheet. Buy only if the existing or campus option leaves a real requirement unmet, and identify that requirement before selecting a package.
